What Is a Neurotoxin?

Neurotoxins, or neuromodulators, are medications that alter the communication between nerves and muscles to relax facial muscles and reduce wrinkles. The active ingredient, Botulinum toxin (Type A) is injected using a small needle to administer the neuromodulator. The medication smooths the look of lines and wrinkles (dynamic wrinkles) caused by repetitive movements on the face. Botulinum toxin can also be used to treat certain medical conditions. Used for nearly 20 years, Botulinum toxin is a safe and effective way to reduce facial wrinkles.

What Can Neuromodulators Treat?

  • Frown Lines: Neuromodulators can help relax the muscles between your eyebrows that cause deep, vertical lines to form when you frown or squint.
  • Crow’s Feet: Smiling can cause wrinkles and creases at the corners of the eyes. The precision of neuromodulators lends itself well to this small area.
  • Horizontal Forehead Creases: Expressive individuals often have creases across their forehead from lifting their eyebrows. We treat specific points along the brow and forehead to reduce muscle movement and smooth forehead creases.
  • Bunny Lines and Lip Lines: Anti-aging injections target the subtle lines on the nose and around the mouth, softening their appearance without altering your natural expression.
  • Chin Dimples: Neuromodulators can smooth out the dimples and puckering that can give the chin an orange-peel texture.
  • Facial Asymmetry: If your facial muscles are causing asymmetries, neuromodulators can help restore balance. These injectables are especially helpful for lifting the brows without surgery.
  • Platysmal Bands: These treatments can relax the prominent bands on the neck, reducing their visibility and helping the neck appear smoother.
  • Large Jaw Muscles: Neuromodulators can be used to reduce the size of overly prominent jaw muscles. This treatment works by preventing muscle contraction in these muscles which makes them smaller over time. It can also be a helpful treatment for resolving pain in the jaw and other symptoms of TMJ disorder.
  • Migraines: For some patients, neuromodulators provide relief from chronic migraines by interrupting pain signals and relaxing specific muscles. While not a permanent solution, it can provide relief for several months at a time.
  • Excess Sweating: These injections can also help manage hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, particularly in the underarms, by interrupting the signals that cause sweat glands to become active.

What Are the Benefits of Neurotoxins?

Fast, Lunchtime Treatments

Neuromodulator treatments are quick and convenient, often taking just 15-30 minutes to complete. This makes it easy to fit into your busy schedule, allowing you to return to your day immediately after your appointment without much disruption.

Customizable Results

Every neuromodulator treatment can be adjusted to suit you. If you want a very light treatment that subtly softens wrinkles and lines, we can achieve this with a soft touch and fewer units. If you want a more aggressive treatment that erases deeper lines and restricts movement more, we can adjust the dosage to fit these goals. With our experience with injecting and our ability to listen to our patients, we can develop a treatment that is as unique as you.

Natural-Looking Results

Neuromodulators can help you achieve a smoother, more youthful appearance without making you look frozen or overly treated. Because we target only the muscles responsible for dynamic wrinkles, these treatments preserve your natural expressions while reducing unwanted lines.

Quick Results With Minimal Downtime

With anti-aging injections, you can start seeing improvements within just a few days. It can be a good way to refresh your appearance before a big event. The treatment also involves minimal downtime, so you can fit appointments right into your busy week.

Non-Surgical Wrinkle Reduction

Neuromodulators offer a non-surgical option for those looking to reduce the appearance of wrinkles without undergoing more invasive procedures. While the results are not permanent, some of the same benefits can be achieved with just a few injections and minimal to no recovery time.

What Types of Neuromodulators Do We Offer?

Botox®

Botox is one of the most widely recognized neuromodulators, known for its ability to effectively reduce the appearance of dynamic wrinkles. It is FDA-approved and backed by years of research, offering a reliable and nonsurgical way to reduce dynamic wrinkles and refresh your appearance. Botox has a formulation that allows for the treatment of small areas with precise and controlled results. Botox can be an excellent option for patients who prefer a reliable and well-established treatment to address several different concerns.

How Botox Works

Botox is formulated using botulinum toxin type A, a purified protein that temporarily reduces muscle activity by blocking nerve signals. Many of the fine lines and wrinkles that develop over time (like crow’s feet, forehead creases, and frown lines) are caused by repeated facial expressions. By relaxing the underlying muscles, Botox helps get rid of these dynamic wrinkles and smooth the skin above them. Treatment involves a series of quick, targeted injections that work beneath the surface of the skin to reduce visible signs of aging. The result is a softer, more refreshed look that still allows for normal facial movement and expression.

What Botox Treats

Botox is FDA-approved for treating frown lines between the eyebrows, crow’s feet around the eyes, and horizontal forehead lines. All three areas can be treated in one appointment. However, it can be used in many other places to refine and enhance your appearance. Common cosmetic treatment areas include:
  • Glabellar lines (frown lines) between the brows
  • Crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes
  • Horizontal forehead lines
  • Bunny lines on the nose
  • Lip lines or a “lip flip” for subtle upper lip enhancement
  • Gummy smile correction
  • Chin dimpling (“orange peel” texture)
  • Neck bands (platysmal bands) for a smoother profile
  • Masseter muscles to soften a square jawline or reduce jaw tension
Botox can be precisely injected to treat one area or multiple zones in a single session, depending on your goals.

Botox for Medical Concerns

While Botox is best known for its cosmetic benefits, it also has FDA-approved medical applications. It can also treat:
Migraines
Botox helps prevent migraines by relaxing muscles and blocking certain pain signals. It can significantly reduce both the frequency and intensity of headaches.
Hyperhidrosis
Injecting Botox into the jaw muscles can relieve tension caused by clenching or grinding (bruxism), offering both pain relief and cosmetic contouring.
TMJ Disorder
Botox blocks the nerve signals that activate sweat glands, particularly under the arms, making it an effective treatment for people who struggle with uncontrollable sweating. If you’re interested in Botox for medical purposes, our team can determine if you’re a candidate and explain how the treatment process works.

What to Expect During Treatment

Botox injections are quick and virtually painless. Most treatments take less than 20 minutes, making it easy to fit into a lunch break or busy schedule. After your consultation and facial assessment, your provider will clean the skin and use a fine needle to administer small amounts of Botox into the targeted muscles. You may feel a brief pinching sensation, but discomfort is minimal. There is no need for anesthesia, and you can resume your normal activities immediately after treatment. Some patients experience mild swelling or redness at the injection sites, which typically resolves within a few hours.

When Will I See Results?

Botox doesn’t work instantly, but you’ll begin to see visible changes in as little as three to five days, with full results developing over the next one to two weeks. Lines and wrinkles will gradually soften, and the skin will appear smoother and more refreshed. Results typically last between three and four months. With regular maintenance, many patients find that their results last longer and that they need fewer units over time to achieve the same effect.

Will Botox Make My Face Look Frozen?

This is one of the most common concerns for first-time patients, but when administered by skilled injectors, Botox results are natural-looking and subtle. At Amplify Aesthetics, we believe in enhancing your appearance without overcorrecting it. We carefully assess your facial anatomy and expression patterns to create a treatment plan that smooths away wrinkles while preserving your ability to smile, frown, and express emotion. The “frozen” look often results from overtreatment or poor injection technique. Our goal is to leave you looking like a well-rested version of yourself, not like someone else.

Is Botox Right for You?

Botox is suitable for most healthy adults who want to address dynamic wrinkles or prevent them from becoming more pronounced. It’s a popular choice for both men and women and can be customized for different facial structures, goals, and ages. Whether you’re treating early signs of aging or targeting deeper lines, Botox offers flexible results without downtime. It may also be right for you if:
  • You want a non-surgical solution for lines and wrinkles
  • You’re seeking relief from migraines, TMJ, or excessive sweating
  • You want subtle results that don’t change how you express yourself
  • You’re interested in starting preventative treatment in your 20s or 30s
During your consultation, we’ll talk through your concerns and build a treatment plan that fits your lifestyle.

Xeomin®

Xeomin is a unique neuromodulator known for its “naked” formulation, which contains only the active ingredient without any added proteins. This pure formulation reduces the likelihood of developing resistance over time which makes it an excellent choice for long-term use. Xeomin is FDA-approved for treating glabellar lines (the vertical frown lines between the eyebrows) and is often chosen by those looking for a natural-looking approach to wrinkle reduction. Patients who might prefer Xeomin are those who have previously used other neuromodulators and are seeking an option that minimizes the risk of antibody formation.

Dysport®

Dysport has smaller molecules of the active ingredient, which gives it certain advantages. Dysport can disperse easily over larger treatment areas because of these smaller molecules. With this increased diffusion, Dysport can also provide natural-looking results that allow you to retain your normal facial expressions. Dysport can begin working two to four days or less after injection which is faster than other neuromodulators.  It is also FDA-approved for expression lines between the eyebrows.

How Neuromodulators Support Other Treatments

Neuromodulators like Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin are often used to enhance the results of other aesthetic treatments by creating a more balanced, receptive canvas. When muscles are relaxed and expression lines are softened, the skin responds better to treatments like microneedling with PRP, RF skin resurfacing, or chemical peels. This can lead to improved texture, longer-lasting results, and greater overall rejuvenation. They also pair well with dermal fillers to restore volume and structure while maintaining natural facial movement, offering a comprehensive, harmonious approach to anti-aging care.

Neurotoxin FAQs

What Are Neuromodulator Treatments Like?

These treatments are quick, simple, safe, and come with minimal pain. They are performed in our office and the consultation often takes place during the same appointment as the injections. Using a very fine needle, we inject a small amount of the botulinum toxin very precisely into several locations. With Botox, Xeomin, or Dysport treatments, no sedation or local anesthetic is required, and you can resume most non-strenuous activities immediately. You can even drive yourself home or back to the office.

How Do Neurotoxins Work?

A small number of tiny intramuscular injections block the body’s natural chemicals (neurotransmitters) that stimulate the muscles to contract and create the appearance of lines due to overactive facial muscles. After several months, the medication is metabolized, nerves regenerate, and motion returns.

How Soon Will I See My Results From Neuromodulator Injections?

Results normally appear within a few days of the injection, with a full effect at 10 to 14 days. However, some patients may notice subtle wrinkle reduction as early as 24 to 48 hours after treatment, depending on the product used. It’s also common for results to continue improving slightly over the first two weeks as the neuromodulator fully settles into the muscles.

How Long Do the Results of Neuromodulators Last?

The treatment generally lasts three to four months. With regular treatments, the duration of the effect can increase and fewer treatments may be needed to keep the same results. Some patients may also find that with consistent use, their muscles become conditioned to reduced movement and may require fewer units over time.

Will My Face Be Frozen After Neurotoxin Treatments?

Even though these muscles have been treated and are relaxed, they still can contract, allowing normal facial expression to be unaffected. The goal of neuromodulator treatment is to soften the appearance of wrinkles while preserving your natural ability to smile, frown, and express yourself fully, avoiding an overly “frozen” look.

How Much Neurotoxin Is Injected?

Treatments are individualized based on our assessment of facial muscles and movement. The amount of medication required is individually determined, and the patient is charged only for the number of units required. When you first arrive, we will have you make facial expressions such as smiling or frowning so we can see which muscles are involved and where the skin folds. We may also take “before” photos to help you compare later. This information, combined with your goals for the treatment, helps us to determine the most effective dose and the injection locations.

What Is the Aftercare for Neuromodulator Injections?
Immediately after the treatment, you should stay upright for three to four hours and avoid rubbing the injection sites to prevent Botox, Xeomin, or Dysport from migrating to other muscles in the face. We also suggest that you avoid intense exercise or heat exposure, such as saunas or hot tubs, for the first 24 hours to ensure the product remains in the intended areas.
